Bottom Line
LogMeIn is a solid, straightforward remote access and file-sharing software that's suitable for personal or corporate use.
LogMeIn is a smooth-running, professional-level remote access app for Windows and macOS PCs that also offers flexible file-sharing features, including a cloud-storage feature not available with similar services we've reviewed. It's an excellent choice for anyone who needs access to a remote computer, whether it's your own desktop at home when you're on the road or that of a distant tech-challenged relative who needs technical support.
Pricing and Plans
LogMeIn comes in three distinct flavors: a Pro plan, which I tested, available for up to two computers ($249.99 per year), scaling up to five computers for $599.99 per year, and a variety of other plans topping out at 50 computers for $4,999.99 per year. There are also pricier Central versions of the software, with features like remote file searches, remote deletions, antivirus, as well a Rescue version for support technicians and IT management, with options that include the ability to reboot a remote machine and automatically reconnect when it starts up again. Unlike TeamViewer and VNC Connect, LogMeIn has no free version, but you can try out any LogMeIn plan free for 14 days.
What Is Remote Access Software?
To those unfamiliar with the term, remote access software lets you run a computer located across the room or across the country as if you were sitting in front of its keyboard and screen. You connect to the remote machine using the remote access app, and then—until you click the mouse outside the remote access window—everything you type and every move you make with the mouse gets sent to the remote machine. This gives you access to your own desktop at home or at the office while traveling with your laptop. You can also typically (but not always) send out an invitation to someone else that lets them access your machine.
Almost all of these programs let you perform other tricks like copying files back and forth between the machine you're really sitting in front of (the 'local' machine) and the remote one, or copying text or graphics to the clipboard on one machine and pasting it on the other. You can generally also open a chat window so you can talk with whoever is sitting in front of the remote machine, which is handy if you're using the app for remote support. Some remote access software also let you make video recordings of what happens on the remote screen, or use the remote screen like a whiteboard, drawing lines and arrows on the remote screen.
People in the know choose one of these three channels for their routers. https://tusmenlaicup.tistory.com/1. However, if you are surrounded by technically savvy people, you may still encounter a crowded channel.
Features and Interface
LogMeIn works a lot like its close rival, GoToMyPC, and you can't go wrong by choosing either of these two. Both provide standard remote access features like chat, file-transfer, local printing of remote files, and invitations for one-time desktop sharing. You can probably expect these two apps to resemble each other more and more in the future, because LogMeIn recently acquired GoToMyPC from its former owner, Citrix, together with its technology and interface design.
While similar in many respects, LogMeIn offers a slightly more complex interface than GoToMyPC and operates in slightly different ways. For instance, it has one security feature that you won't find elsewhere: It sends you an email if anyone tries to log in to one or your machines with an invalid password. Since I use long, complicated passwords, I get these messages every time I mistype my LogMeIn password, so they're more annoying than useful to me, personally, but they could be very valuable in corporate settings, if, for example, you had a snoopy officemate.
How It Works
You can log in to remote machines from either the LogMeIn client app or by signing in to the LogMeIn site in your browser and clicking the name of your remote machine. If you use the browser and the client app isn't already installed on your local machine, the browser downloads the client and uses it to connect. After you close the connection, the app gives you the option of keeping it on your machine or discarding it.
The client app is a minimal-looking viewer with a packed options menu that's available when you're connected remotely. This menu lets you blank the remote screen to keep prying eyes from seeing what you're doing. It also lets you communicate with anyone sitting at the remote machine by letting you draw on the remote screen as if it were a whiteboard, or turn the mouse cursor into a laser pointer. You can also sync the local and remote clipboards so you can copy text or graphics between the two machines.
While you're running the client app, you can drag and drop files in both directions between the local and remote machine. Keep in mind, however, that this drag-to-desktop feature operates only on the Windows version of the client app, not the Mac version. Alternately, under both Windows- and Mac-equipped systems, you can launch a separate File Manager window from the client app or LogMeIn's webpage and transfer files back and forth using a standard two-pane file-manager interface.
Desktop Access
When you're back in the office, sitting in front of your machine, you launch the LogMeIn control panel app that you installed when you registered the machine with LogMeIn. The control panel app lets you send out invitations giving access to your machine, and also lets you send out invitations to friends or colleagues to download one or more files from your machine. This is useful for files that are too large for email, but the files are only available when your machine is awake and online, unlike files that you share via Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, or Apple's iCloud Drive(Free at Apple.com) .
LogMeIn offers an alternative to those services in its cloud-based Files for LogMeIn Pro service, which gives you 1TB of storage for files that you want to store or share. It doesn't, however, offer collaborative editing features like those available for Microsoft Office documents in DropBox or Microsoft OneDrive or for iWork documents in iCloud. You can access the cloud-based files either through a browser or via an Explorer window that opens when you click the LogMeIn Files button on the client app, but there's no other direct integration between the cloud-based files feature and the remote access features.
Access From Anywhere
LogMeIn has everything you're likely to want in a remote access app, and it's a good choice for anyone who routinely needs to access more than one computer. GoToMyPC has the edge if you only have one machine that you want to run remotely—for example, your tech-challenged relative's desktop or laptop—as well as a slight edge in ease of use. Either one is an excellent choice, but GoToMyPC's ease of use tips the balance; both it and TeamViewer share our Editors' Choice for remote access software, with GoToMyPC taking the prize for personal use, and TeamViewer for corporate-level features.
